INCOGNITO: the many faces of the detective
The idea of drawing people can be daunting, but if you start with some basic shapes, it’s not difficult. Let’s take a look at the classic detective character. You can create a number of different looks by starting with the basic shapes of the face and then building on different features such as a mustache, a beard, glasses, a pipe, a cigarette, and a variety of hats and jackets.

Proportion matters!
You can do almost anything with a person’s face and they will look good if you keep the facial proportions in mind. No matter how wide, round, or square a face is, the eyes, nose, and ears will fall in approximately the same places in relation to the head.

Make him unique!
Try to add something unique to your characters. For example the addition of a playing card stuck in his hat band could suggest the detective has a gambling problem. Or maybe he wears a butterfly pin on his collar? Or carries a gold pocket watch? Small details like these are what make a character interesting.

Creativity Activity: Disguise Your Detective
Most of us get a large number of clothing catalogs in the mail. Pick a few and look through them for fun outfits to put on your detective! Clothing catalogs can be a great source for both ideas and poses.
