Digital 101:
Painter Demo 2: Fine Point Pen

The image in this tutorial was created using Painter 7 and only ONE tool - the "Fine Point Pen". I hope this demonstration shows how much you can do with just one tool (for my more finished pictures I use a number of tools, some of which I have customized to my tastes).

If you have Painter 7 (I don't know that it will work with older or newer versions) you can download and watch a script of the paining being created: Ryn_Moonlight_Painting.ssd
Just save the script to your computer and load it using the Scripts window/menu in Painter.

Blocking in the Basics
First of all my Wacom tablet is set on "Med" Pressure. I also change my pen size a number of times (but always using the Fine Point Pen). I begin to build an idea and mood with colors. I think it will be a nighttime picture with water and the moon and some buildings. I tend to start out medium/dark and then lighten and define more using smaller and smaller brushes (notice this is the reverse of my daytime method which is light to dark, not dark to light). So once the basic shape in blocked in I've added some darker details and an idea of the water.

The Sky
Now I want more feeling to the sky so I start with a more intense blue. I paint right over some of my building which is fine, I can still see where I want them, and I'm more focused on getting the sky feeling right. I also want to add the moon... so I block in some lighter yellow and give the moon a little texture with some darker and lighter color. I also add some stars to the sky.

The Lamppost
For the lamppost I block in the base, then with the opacity of my brush way down and paint in the light and the glow around it. Then I add the top shape to the post.

Detailing
Now I'm adding in some more details - finishing up the tower, tossing in some grass etc. I take care to be sure some of the sky color is on the buildings and in the grass - it helps to give the picture a united feeling.

Finished picture
This is the finished picture (click for actual 500 x 500 size). Full painting time was about 10 minutes. For more detailed pictures I work larger a longer (1000 to 4000 pixels and 1 to 10 hours normally). And there you have it! For more details on my working process I recommend watching the script and/or reading the other digital tutorials (even if you are working in Painter many of the techniques I mention in the Photoshop tutorials apply).
